Healthy Aging – What is your New Year Muscle & Movement Plan?

By Eunice K. Neubauer, CSA

Recently I was reminded that as we age we lose muscle.  For me weekly weight lifting at least 2 times at home or Fitness 19 is my goal.  Each year unless we are moving and using our muscles they will atrophy after age 40.   And the older we are the faster this process occurs.    Muscles are critical to balance and reducing falls.  We all have heard the benefits of working out.  But, what is it we can do that we will follow through on to keep us moving and active?  Here are several ideas:

  • SilverSneakers: check your health plan to see if it’s covered by checking here
  • Like animals? Volunteer at a shelter. Dogs like to go for walks and you’ll have some company. Horses are another animal that gets you outdoors.
  • Is biking your thing? Many places have cycling options and you can buy a device to bring your bike into your home to keep biking in the winter months.
  • Volunteer at local events or venues. This winter there are a lot of opportunities to do this in the Twin Cities. See this link for Volunteer opportunities through St. Paul Parks.

This month I’ll be posting some other ideas and videos on my Facebook page.  If you haven’t “liked” my page, please do so to see what other ideas I may have for you.   Here’s to a year maintaining muscle and movement!
